Drive safely this winter

On Behalf of | Nov 19, 2021 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Massachusetts can have some seriously cold winters, and the roads can become extremely icy. However, driving is a necessary hazard for a lot of people who need to get to and from their jobs. If you have to drive a lot this winter, it’s important that you put your safety first.

Prepare your vehicle

The first step to driving safe this winter is making sure that your vehicle is prepared for the changing weather conditions. Your tires should be properly inflated and have plenty of tread left to take on the icy roads. Always keep your gas tank filled at least halfway in case you get lost. It’s also vital to have a survival bag in your car that includes items like:

• A flashlight
• Blankets
• Warm clothes
• Snacks
• Water
• An ice scraper
• Medications

Icy road tips

Your tires won’t work the same on icy roads, so you need to drive differently to compensate for that. For example, cruise control should never be used on slippery roads because it can cause motor vehicle accidents. It’s very difficult to accelerate up a hill when the road is icy, so you should always try to avoid stopping on a hill. Accelerating and decelerating should be done gradually, and you should increase your following distance behind other cars.

Avoid unnecessary trips

One of the best ways to avoid getting into an accident this winter is to avoid driving unless it’s absolutely necessary. If you can do all of your grocery shopping once a week instead of making daily trips to the store, you can lower your accident risk significantly. If you have to take a long-distance car trip, check the weather ahead of time and let your friends and family know the route you’re taking.
