What symptoms may signal a pregnancy complication?

On Behalf of | Aug 12, 2016 | Pregnancy-Related Injuries

Every pregnancy is different. Expectant women in Massachusetts have many things to learn about and pay attention to while carrying their babies. Knowing what is normal and when action is needed can be difficult but that is part of what an obstetrician is supposed to help with. However, if you are pregnant, you should educate yourself about some potential warning signs so that you can advocate for yourself and your baby.

As explained by WebMD, anyone can have a headache but if your headache happens in the last few months of your pregnancy, will not go away and is accompanied by eye issues, swelling and pain in your abdomen, you may want to ask your doctor about preeclampsia. Morning sickness or other nausea that prevents you from taking in sufficient food and fluids puts you at risk for dehydration and should also be monitored.

If you experience bleeding while pregnant, it could mean different things depending upon your stage of pregnancy. If you are in your last few months of pregnancy, concerns could be about a potential placental abruption. In your second trimester or even the latter portion of your first trimester, bleeding may be a sign of a miscarriage. An ectopic pregnancy may be signalled by bleeding earlier in your pregnancy.

Sometimes, the signs you should watch for are more directly about your baby. Becoming aware of your baby’s typical activity patterns gives you the ability to notice any change in this that you could then talk with your doctor about.
