Unprofessional plastic surgery can result in severe complications

On Behalf of | Oct 30, 2015 | Doctor Errors

Many Massachusetts residents choose to undergo cosmetic procedures for a variety of reasons. Plastic surgery may be seen as a relatively low-risk type of surgery; however, most cosmetic procedures carry the same risks as other types of surgery. Some cosmetic procedures have risks that are unique in the medical field.

Botched plastic surgery jobs are more than a horror story to look at in gossip columns, states TotalBeauty. When done incorrectly, cosmetic procedures can result in permanent disfigurement or death. Some of the unwanted consequences of plastic surgery, such as scarring, are unavoidable. Some patients may have minimal scarring, while genetics or other factors can result in other patients sporting large or pronounced scars.

Plastic surgery becomes more dangerous when it is performed by unqualified surgeons or fakes. For example, some medical spas across the country offer services, such as liposuction, without the aid of a certified plastic surgeon. These procedures are performed under local anesthesia instead of general. Some patients have overdosed on anesthesia and died from respiratory depression. In other cases, doctors unqualified and improperly educated in cosmetic procedures offer services like Botox in addition to their usual practice, such as dentistry or gynecology. Serious complications like temporary blindness may occur as a result of improperly-administered Botox injections.

The fees for each cosmetic procedure can range from several hundred to thousands of dollars, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. These costs for plastic surgery may lead some people to seek out cheaper, and often more dangerous, services from the unqualified and inexperienced. As stated, putting trust in someone who is not a professional can have disastrous results.
