Prevention techniques to avoid post-surgical infection

On Behalf of | Oct 23, 2015 | Doctor Errors

The risk of an infection after surgery is higher than you might suspect. According to Consumer Reports, about one in 20 people across the country contract an infection during their hospital stay. The period of time immediately following surgery is especially risky, since you will be healing from surgical incisions and susceptible to infections in or near your surgery site. At Donovan & O’Connor, LLP, we understand the risks Massachusetts residents face due to a doctor error, and we are prepared to help clients seek compensation for medical negligence.

Is there anything you can do to reduce your chances of getting an infection in the hospital? Here are some preventive measures you might want to keep in mind:

  • Review the safety rating of your hospital with Consumer Reports before your surgery.
  • Draft an advance directive (living will) and review it with your doctors and relatives so everyone knows your preferences if you have an incapacitating medical emergency.
  • Before the procedure, discuss the surgery with your doctor and get informed on your post-operative care and how to take your medications.
  • Make sure each member of the medical staff adheres to safety and hygiene standards, including hand-washing and signing off on your chart after each procedure.
  • Arrange to save your own blood in a bank before the surgery in case you are worried about infections if you need a transfusion.
  • Understand any conditions you might have that could increase your chances of having a blood clot, stroke or heart attack during surgery, and discuss your options with your doctor.

Being fully informed and involved in your surgical decisions and post-operation treatment may help to increase your odds of leaving the hospital without an infection or other complication. To learn more about the potential mistakes during or after surgery, visit our medical malpractice page.
