Medical mistakes made during pregnancy can be devastating

On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2014 | Birth Injuries

Pregnancy can be an extraordinary time for a family, and it is also a time to strictly monitor a mother’s health in order to protect the unborn child. At Donovan & O’Connor, LLP, we know how important it is for medical professionals in Massachussetts to give a mother information on what she can do to have a healthy pregnancy. Additionally, physicians should be monitoring the woman to spot and quickly address any potential complications.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, maternal infections during pregnancy can cause an array of developmental issues, and the agency estimates that they cause roughly 25 percent of hearing loss among infants. The CDC also reports that complications during birth can lead to developmental disabilities.

There are ways that physicians can prevent these issues from occurring. Some common mistakes that lead to birth injuries include the following:

  • Improperly delivering a child, such as failure to use forceps or a vacuum correctly
  • Failing to monitor vital signs of a mother and infant during pregnancy
  • Failing to order a cesarean section or performing one unnecessarily
  • Inducing labor improperly and causing placental abruption

A mother may be doing everything right in terms of eating healthy food and avoiding the items on the “do not eat” list, but if her physician is inept, the consequences could be grave. Our attorneys at Donovan & O’Connor LLP regularly hold medical professionals accountable for the mistakes they make that lead to lifelong repercussions.
