The birth of a baby is arguably one of the greatest moments in the life of a parent in Springfield, Massachusetts. The joy and happiness that a brand new baby can bring into a family is a unique experience. During pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum, parents deserve to have proper care by medical personnel to ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible.
For one mother, her experience giving birth at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts was anything but smooth. The woman says that the medical staff did not monitor her condition nor did they give her proper care following her C-section. During the procedure performed in 2007, the woman was infected with a flesh-eating bacteria, also known as necrotizing fasciitis. She also said that the staff failed to properly examine her wound and take her condition seriously.
As a result of the infection, the woman had to have both of her arms amputated at the elbows as well as both of her legs. She also lost some of her internal organs to the disease and has required over 40 surgeries.
The woman filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the doctors, nurses and OB-GYN group who were charged with caring for her. Her lawsuit was recently settled for $9.5 million. The money will go toward helping out with her medical bills and be placed in two trusts for the woman’s daughters. Although no amount of money can make up for the pain and suffering that this woman has had to endure, hopefully it will be able to ease the financial burden brought on as a result of the negligence of her medical staff.
